Car Exhausts

The function of the car exhaust is to remove harmful gases, noise reduction, increase fuel efficiency and to protect the engine.

The gases that are produced by the engine can be harmful to the engine and also to passengers if they are not removed, so they are passed through an exhaust manifold to direct them out of the car.

Noise reduction is performed by a part of the exhaust called the muffler. The muffler dampens the noise produced by the engine meaning your car is quieter when it is running.

When the engine has the gases removed it runs better and therefore your car’s performance is improved. When your engine is being protected and kept running effectively, the car does not need to use as much fuel, increasing the fuel efficiency.

When to service my exhaust?

Usually, the first sign that your exhaust needs looking at is when it begins making strange noises such as a roar, rattle or a hiss. These noises can indicate issues with the muffler such as a crack or corrosion or it can mean that the exhaust has shifted and is not sitting correctly due to something being loose.

There are sometimes visual signs that your exhaust needs checking, if you can see cracks in it or if there is an excess amount of rust then it may need checking. Our best advice for any of these signs is to bring it in for us to check over.
